The Boy and the Heron is headed to Max.
The banner revealed that it had actually extended its contract with GKIDS and will continue to hold the unique U.S. movie streaming rights for Studio Ghibli. As part of the offer, Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron will stream on Max at some point this year.
The Boy and the Heron, aka How Do You Live?, produced by Studio Ghibli, follows a teenage kid called Mahito Maki (Soma Santoki) as he gets in a wonderful world with a talking grey heron (Masaki Suda). The movie obtains its Japanese title from the 1937 book of the exact same name by Genzaburo Yoshino, Miyazaki crafted an initial story about love and familial sorrow based on his own youth. The English voice cast stars Luca Padovan as Mahito and Robert Pattinson as The Gray Heron.
The movie won Best Animated Feature at the 2024 Academy Awards, the 2nd anime movie to do so given that Miyazaki's Spirited Away won the award 21 years earlier.

Because 2020, Max has actually been the streaming home for all Studio Ghibli movies including My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Ponyo, and Howl's Moving Castle.
