The College Football Playoff choice committee made the hard choice to leave Florida State out of the four-team playoff last season regardless of the group having an unbeaten record at the time.
Per Ryan Morik of Fox News, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers stated he thinks in 2015's snub of Florida State was a prime example of why the growth to a 12-team playoff this year was needed.
“It leaves a bit more space for mistake. I believe it's what college football requires,” Ewers stated.
Last season's College Football Playoff included Texas, Alabama, Michigan and Washington. Alabama beating back-to-back nationwide champ Georgia in the SEC Championship Game sufficed for the committee to provide the Crimson Tide the last area over the Seminoles regardless of their 13-0 record and the ACC title.
Ewers stated he thought the committee made the best call, explaining that Florida State lost star quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending ankle injury late in the year.
“It's absolutely a difficult option to make, specifically with how the SEC Championship Game went, and Florida State and Jordan Travis getting hurt– in their minds, they were simply choosing who was playing the very best football today,” Ewers stated.
Ewers included that he's eagerly anticipating seeing how things play out under the brand-new system this year.
“I believe it's gon na offer a lot more groups chances to win a championship game, and I believe it's gon na be fantastic for the fans to see their groups making college football runs,” he stated. “Even for a smaller sized program that hasn't had the chances, that hasn't had a few of the chances that a few of the larger programs have actually had, I believe it's gon na be incredible for those guys to get a shot at it for sure.”
Ewers and the Longhorns will start their chase for the championship game when they open the 2024 project on Aug. 31 in the house versus Colorado State.
