In a race that might choose control of the U.S. Senate, Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) is assaulting his opposition, Republican Tim Sheehy, for his position on abortion.

Montana’s Senate race is among a half-dozen tight contests around the nation in which Democrats are safeguarding seats required to keep their one-seat bulk. If Republicans turn Tester’s seat, they might take control of the chamber even if they stop working to oust Democrats in any other essential races.

In a series of Facebook advertisements introduced in early September, Tester’s project stated Sheehy supports prohibiting abortion without any exceptions.

An advertisement introduced on Sept. 6 stated, “Tim Sheehy wishes to eliminate the liberty to select what occurs with your own body, and consider that power to political leaders. Sheehy would let political leaders like him prohibit abortion, without any exceptions for rape or to conserve a female’s life, and criminalize females. We can’t let Tim Sheehy take our liberty away.”

Sheehy’s Anti-Abortion Stance Allows for Rape, Health Exceptions

Sheehy’s site calls him “happily pro-life,” and he’s marketing versus abortion. He opposes a step on Montana’s November tally that would change the Montana Constitution to offer the right to “make and perform choices about one’s own pregnancy, consisting of the right to abortion.”

In July, we ranked False Sheehy’s declaration that Tester and other Democrats have actually chosen “optional abortions approximately and consisting of the minute of birth. Healthy, 9-month-year-old infant eliminated at the minute of birth.”

Contrary to the brand-new advertisement’s message, Sheehy has actually voiced assistance for exceptions.

In a Montana Public Radio interview in May, Sheehy was asked, “Yes or no, do you support a federal restriction on abortion?”

And in a June argument with Tester, Sheehy stated, “I’ll constantly safeguard the 3 rights for females: rape, incest, life of the mom.”

The problems area of Sheehy’s project site does not state that he has a no-exceptions position, nor does it state he would “criminalize ladies” who have abortions.

In a declaration, the Sheehy project informed PolitiFact that the advertisement mischaracterizes Sheehy’s abortion position. Enabling no exceptions “has actually never ever been Tim’s position,” the project stated.
