Radoslaw “Radek” Sikorski and the Monitor return numerous years. As a popular Polish political leader with ties to Washington, he would appear at casual “coffees” I hosted with press reporters to go over European affairs– a subject that handled included seriousness after Russia’s intrusion of Ukraine.
Now, Mr. Sikorski is once again Poland’s foreign minister. Recently, he took a trip here with the Polish president and prime minister for a conference with President Joe Biden and congressional leaders, advising extra military help to Ukraine. I got that chance to arrange a Monitor Breakfast on March 12, and he did not dissatisfy.
Informed at Oxford University, Mr. Sikorski has a pungent method of revealing himself. Back in 2019, when we initially fulfilled, he spoke optimistically of the European Union post-Brexit: “The remains appears quite vibrant,” he stated, the heading of our session.
At today’s well-attended breakfast, Mr. Sikorski made news, and was extensively priced quote in significant media– from The New York Times to Reuters to Bloomberg. For the Monitor’s protection of the breakfast, please click on this link.
Our YouTube video of the occasion likewise amassed attention– 10s of countless views– no doubt assisted by my pal Marek Walkuski of Polish Radio, who has a large following on social networks.
The most watched part of the video, taped by Monitor fellow Troy Aidan Sambajon, came at the 35:46 mark, when Mr. Sikorski stated: “If Ukraine wins this war, which they can and should, they’ll have among the greatest armies in Europe and they’ll be training us.”
I extremely advise enjoying the entire video. I have to confess, Mr. Sikorski was holding back simply a little. When inquired about the possibility of previous President Donald Trump’s go back to power, he demurred.
“Thank you for this invite to interfere in the internal affairs of our most significant ally,” he stated to laughter.
“But are you worried?” I pushed. Mr. Trump opposes extra help to Ukraine and has actually recommended Russia can do whatever it desires to any NATO member that does not invest enough on defense.
“When I belonged to the European Parliament, I would have boldly gone into that arena,” Mr. Sikorski stated, mentioning all our free-wheeling coffees. “But as foreign minister, I’ll pass.”
