Ask Amy: Should we attempt a long-distance relationship or separate?

Dear Amy: My boyfriend/significant other of 13 years is 6 years older than me. He wishes to retire in a year or more and move more than 200 miles far from the town where we both presently live.

I have my own home, household, and task in my home town. I’ve lived here for my whole life.

My SO and I have no strategies to wed or cohabit.

Should we attempt a long-distance relationship, or separate now due to the fact that our future strategies do not appear to consist of the other?

— Perplexed in the Midwest

Dear Perplexed: I pick up in the subtext of your concern that you may feel rather stung by what you view as your better half’s option not just to leave town, however to leave you.

Yes, you might preempt this still far-off option by preparing to break up, or you might at least try a long-distance relationship by attempting to go to one another on a loose schedule. If he lands in a great area, you may see this as each of you having something of a 2nd home: a 2nd location to take a trip to when you wish to.
