Recently, Russell Wilson had among his finest days in the NFL. He sustained the Pittsburgh Steelers to success over the Cincinnati Bengals, tossing for over 400 lawns and 3 goals. In general, it was an outstanding efficiency. Previous NFL quarterback Kurt Warner still has some concerns about what Wilson did.
“Russell [Wilson] tossed for over 400 backyards, and some extremely lovely football, and conclusive with what he was doing,” Warner stated just recently on his YouTube channel. “Then other ones, simply appears like he's not rather sure what's going on however simply took place to make plays in those scenarios and have success.”
On paper, it appears outrageous to slam what Wilson did versus the Bengals. He made play after play, reversing the clock to when he was with the Seattle Seahawks. Over the course of that video, Warner makes some good points based on the understanding offered to him.
Among the concerns Warner has with Wilson is how rapidly he moved through his developments to strike his checkdown. Versus the Bengals, those brief tosses were a huge source of yardage for the Steelers' offense. They left it open and after that had a hard time to make take on gamers like Najee Harris.
This is one play that Warner breaks down that supports what he's stating. It's a fine example, too. The Steelers are established around midfield, with Wilson fabricating a fast handoff. As he reverses, he nearly immediately relocates to take a look at his checkdown. He fabricates that toss and attempts to rush, eventually taking a sack.
Warner's confusion comes from how rapidly Wilson takes his eyes off the downfield paths.
“Did you see how quick, he returns, makes the phony, he's currently to his checkdown once again. He's even taking his hand off the ball, he's prepared to toss his checkdown. No one's even out of their path. No one's even come out of their path and he's all set to toss the checkdown.
“He's pumping it. George [Pickens] comes open, the within guy slides into that window, he's open too. There's an excellent pocket. He's got both of these tosses to get the piece play, and he's currently punted to the back. Now, he's removed. Once again, make it make good sense.”
From that viewpoint, Warner isn't incorrect. Wilson most likely might've made a larger play there. He does not even wind up tossing the ball to the running back. Warner highlights other plays that likewise puzzle him, questioning what Wilson is believing.
There may be a factor why Wilson was so fast to look for his checkdown versus the Bengals. After the video game, Najee Harris mentioned the Steelers understood what the Bengals' defense was going to do. They understood any screens and beneath passes they tried would have chances to acquire additional yardage.
Certainly, Warner isn't in the Steelers' locker space, so he's not privy to details like that.
