WASHINGTON, DC– According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics’ National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries in 2023 (launched December 19th, 2024), there were 5,283 deadly work injuries taped in the United States in 2023, a 3.7-percent reduction from 5,486 in 2022. (See chart 1). The deadly work injury rate was 3.5 casualties per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees, below 3.7 in 2022. (See chart 2.) These information are from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI).

Secret Findings
– An employee passed away every 99 minutes from a job-related injury in 2023 compared to 96 minutes in 2022.
– Transportation events were the most regular kind of deadly occasion, representing 36.8 percent (1,942) of all occupational casualties in 2023.
– Fatalities due to violent acts amounted to 740 in 2023. Murders (458) represented 61.9 percent of violent acts and 8.7 percent of all job-related deaths.
– Opioids were the main source of 162 deaths and a factor in an extra 144 deaths where numerous drugs were the source.
– The deadly injury count and rate for Black or African American employees reduced from 2022 to 2023. The count dropped 10.2 percent from 734 in 2022 to 659 in 2023 and the rate dropped from 4.2 to 3.6 cases per 100,000 FTE employees.
Employee Characteristics
– The deadly injury rate for Hispanic or Latino employees reduced from 2022 to 2023, below 4.6 to 4.4 cases per 100,000 FTE employees.
– Transportation events were the greatest reason for casualties for both Black or African American (261) and Hispanic or Latino (390) employees in 2023. The personal market sector with the greatest variety of Black or African American employee deaths was transport and warehousing (200) and for Hispanic or Latino employees it was building (410 ).
– Foreign-born Hispanic or Latino employees comprised 67.1 percent (839) of all Hispanic or Latino employee casualties (1,250). Deaths in the personal building market sector represented 37.5 percent (315) of the 839 foreign-born Hispanic or Latino employee deaths in 2023.
– Women represented 8.5 percent (447) of all casualties, however represented 18.3 percent (84) of murders in 2023.
– Women had the greatest variety of deaths in the personal healthcare and social help market sector (63) followed by the retail trade sector (59 ).
– Workers ages 55 to 64 continued to have the greatest variety of casualties in 2023 with 1,089 (20.6 percent of overall casualties). Transport events were the greatest reason for casualties for this age (401 ), followed by falls, slips, and journeys (226 ).
– Workers ages 25 to 34 had the greatest variety of casualties due to violent acts (179 ), consisting of 121 murders and 58 suicides.
Personal Industry
– Construction had the most casualties (1,075) amongst all market sectors in 2023, and was the greatest for the sector returning to 2011.
