Whitner states 49ers need to cut Campbell for declining to play initially appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
NBC Sports Bay Area experts Donte Whitner and Rod Brooks didn't keep back on 49ers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell after he declined to play in San Francisco's loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.
“Cut him,” Whitner, who played 11 NFL seasons, stated on “49ers Postgame Live” after San Francisco's 12-6 loss. “That's my take. Cut him. He hasn't played well all season and after that you get a near-All-Pro linebacker back that you understand is returning off injury, you understand that they're going to place him into the beginning lineup, you understand that you're going to be his backup and after that you inform the coaches, I'm not entering the video game. I do not wish to play today. I would have cut you right there on video game day.
“We do not sympathize with you. You're expert, you have not done your task and you saw the unique distinction with Dre Greenlaw in the video game regarding why they played him over Campbell. Cut him. That's for Kyle Shanahan, that's for the 49ers company. You cut this guy. There's no chance he stays on the group tomorrow.”
Campbell, who appeared in all 13 49ers video games this season, didn't play Thursday as Greenlaw made his season launching following a prolonged rehabilitation from a torn Achilles.
After the video game, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan described what took place.
“He stated he didn't wish to play today,” Shanahan stated.
Brooks provided his ideas on the scenario.
“That was a sucker relocation,” Brooks stated. “That's horrible. He stopped on his group. He stopped on his group. That's the worst thing you might do.”
The 49ers signed Campbell, a nine-year NFL veteran, to a 1 year, $5 million agreement this offseason after he invested the last 3 years with the Green Bay Packers.
In addition to Shanahan, 49ers tight end George Kittle and cornerback Charvarius Ward weren't pleased with Campbell after the loss.
While it's uncertain if the 49ers will cut Campbell, his San Francisco period and the group's playoff hopes both seem hanging by a thread.
